Thanks for sharing this Darren. I didn't know that Tony had died this week. After listening to your book review I went down a google rabbit hole that was better than most of my recent US searches. I remember Tony's energy from youth group days from videos and I think I saw him once in Vancouver. I wish I'd spent more of my evangelical years listening to people like him. The searches I found most interesting though were about Tony's wife Peggy and his son Bart. The site Queer Theology has a good interview with Peggy about her affirming LGBTQ journey that proceeded Tony's by decades. Bart now is a compassionate humanist. There is a 2018 documentary with Tony and Bart called 'Leaving My Father's Faith' that I wondered if you or anyone else had seen.
Thanks for the links, Ruth, I will check them out. I recall watching over time as TC moved closer to affirming LBGTQ relationships but had lost touch with his work more recently. I'm pleased he got there in the end and am interested to hear more about Peggy's journey. The documentary sounds fascinating too. The sad thing is that in a lot of evangelical circles there seems to be a desire to turn the clock back, and we're seeing that in the UK as well as in North America. But I have been encouraged to find so many reasonable voices here on Substack, long may it continue.
Thank you for re sharing this… bittersweet to listen again and at the same time so precious. I like to imagine Anne and Tony catching up in a leftie bit of heaven, whatever or wherever that might be.
Thanks Catriona, bittersweet is absolutely right. I love the image of Anne and Tony gabbing away in leftie heaven. And yes, who knew that voices changed so much?
